Exhbition TextObjects of Transcendence looks at how the object can transcend its individual meaning to make a social or political comment. It brings together the work of leading contemporary artists Ele Carpenter, Jeremy Hutchison, Jasleen Kaur&#38;nbsp;and&#38;nbsp;Matthew Plummer-Fernandez.

The exhibition explores how each of the artists focuses on materiality in their own art practices and how the language emerging from the object can draw our attention, challenging our way of seeing reality, and rewarding us with new perspectives on a range of contemporary issues. From portraits built from Amazon’s&#38;nbsp;purchase-behaviouralgorithms to everyday items bathed in radioactivity, this is an exhibition that will spark new ways of thinking.

About the workIn Singularly Assured Destruction: A laboratory for measuring variable risk perception, Ele Carpenter creates an amateur laboratory of uranium glass. This glass is one of the most familiar everyday sources of radiation&#38;nbsp;found in&#38;nbsp;our domestic&#38;nbsp;spaces,&#38;nbsp;and is sourced from antique&#38;nbsp;centres&#38;nbsp;and charity shops in the UK. The artwork highlights the uncanny nature of&#38;nbsp;radiation,&#38;nbsp;and the need for a wider understanding of the&#38;nbsp;behaviour&#38;nbsp;of radioactive isotopes in the environment.

Matthew Plummer-Fernandez reveals the way online consumers profiles are constructed. In Customers Who Also Bought, a series of portraits are created entirely by algorithms, finding shoppers and product images. Each person’s Amazon buying habits automatically create a collage that is strangely beautiful – and resembling Italian Renaissance painter Archimboldo’s renowned portrait heads made of objects – while posing the question: is this who we are?

Jeremy Hutchison’s i-&#38;nbsp;explores the human body as a product of consumption and part of material culture. Have you ever noticed the hands that hold the objects we desire: the&#38;nbsp;i-Phone,&#38;nbsp;or the&#38;nbsp;i-Pad? The artist considers how these disembodied body parts come to represent something different from the people they belong to.

Jasleen Kaur’s new work Slightly Awkward Feeling&#38;nbsp;investigates ‘aspirational materials’ and aesthetics of British Asian homes and Gurdwaras, looking at how the decorations and furnishings, through use, have taken on a new perceived meaning and created a kind of Indian aesthetic.

Unleashed weekend event oraganised with&#38;nbsp;Vincent Van Uffelen

A weekend of collaborative co-exploration of long known or newly to be discovered aspects of media art. Unleashed which was held at Apiary Studios in East London provided the opportunity for artists to host or participate on a range of artistic research projects. To kick start new or refine existing ideas, meet other interested parties, and engage in valuable exchange of knowledge, critique, and experiences.

AboutMixing the City – David Strang &#38;amp; Andy PriorParticipants in the workshop are invited to create content for use in the bespoke Quicktime WebJay (QTWJ) environment, using field recording techniques and video capture within the surrounding area. You will explore a range of field recording techniques and abstract video capture, using various sonic arts and video arts methods, to create A/V rhythms which are then manipulated/controlled within QTWJ. The recorded material will be added to a database and will continue to be used by any QTWJ workshops/users in the future. Computational Crystallomancy – Stephen FortuneThis workshop brings the occult methods of crystal gazing into proximity with the DIY entry point to ubiquitous computing. This workshop will combine the arduino and psychological experiments for discerning trance states. The arduino is the amateur-enthusiast avenue into sensor aware environments. Those psychological experiments used bodily traces to determine the subjects inner state of mind. Both will be combined to see what data sampling all elements of the crystallomancy circuit can tell us about the computational modelling of reality that ubiquitous computing entails.This project is at it’s conceptual inception and is looking for people who are interested in how reality can be made sensible to computers and those who would have an interest is seeing how intuitive practices like crystal gazing reconcile with the rational &#38;amp; cognitive disposition of computational culture. Introductory arduino (input feeds) and processing data feeds will be explored.

Bodies in Communication – Deep Media Research
Deep Media Research develops simple prototypes to explore the vast field of infra-verbal bodily communication. In our workshop we will explore how we can use sensors to measure signals of our body and actuators to make those signals perceivable by others. We’ll make use of simple electronics, the Arduino microcontroller, and some code and are looking for beginners and intermediates who want to be introduced into body sensing (galvanic skin response, pulse, …), experiment with actuators and/or help to develop the project further.http://deepmediaresearch.org

Optical Sound – Dominick AllenOptical Sound will be a practical, hands on workshop building and exploring optical microphones (devices that turn fluctuations in light into sound) for use in field recordings, performances etc. Everybody attending the workshop will have the chance to build their own optical microphone which they can take away with them for a small donation. The workshop will be followed by an audio-visual performance to explore the possibilities of these microphones. Everybody is welcome and no previous experience of electronics is necessary

Performing Screen – Madi BoydThis project in progress is to create a robotic puppet like screen which will interact with the film projected onto it in order to create an intense dialogue. The screen will be composed, eventually, of hundreds of small independently moving parts. The parts will be controlled by servos so that they move in all directions in an organic but choreographed formation. They will appear to react to and be sculpted by the film. This performative dialogue between the projection and the screen will extend into a tussle in their attempts to shape each other, creating a new dynamic form in the process.This project is at the concept/experimental stage and invite interested artist and technicians to partake researching several aspects needed to complete this work. These include: materials which will be able to move effectively, materials which reflect and absorb light in varying amounts, programming/controlling up to 80+ servo motors.http://www.madiboyd.com

Touch and Go investigates interactivity and participation, as well as light art and new media approaches to the public space as tools that foster engagement and shared forms of participation.

Unleashed Devices is a playful exhibition in which artists have reconstructed, remixed and reinvented everyday electronic devices. Working in this way, the artists change our understanding of the possible use of data and purpose of technology. These exhibits not only challenge our conception of technology but also of music, art and design.

The exhibition of 30 installations and exhibits by over 40 artists is part of the NODE.LONDONAutumn season in conjunction with OpenLab DIY workshops at SPACE and DIY instrument performances at A10 LAB. and will form part of the LONDON DESIGN FESTIVAL

Unleashed Devices is an exhibition of DIY, hacking and open source projects by artists who explore technologies critically and creatively. By reconstructing, remixing and reinventing everyday electronic devices, these take on a new life as they shift our vision of the use of data and purpose of technology. Playing with frontiers, such projects not only challenge our conception of technology but also music, art and design. Here, they reveal the power of DIY modes as tools to stimulate social reflection and participation.

New ways of engaging with the spectator is a core concern. Unleashed Devices includes playful installations, interactive electronic-sculptures, movement tracking works and performances, as well as coding and hardware based artworks, creating innovative media installations and new experiences.

The progression of Interactive art is not a recent phenomenon, originally explored in the 1960’s; it’s visibility in the art world has often been shrouded, seen as a fad created by artists whose principal concern is in producing works of technical trickery, rather than artworks that pursue an intellectual and referential meaning. However, in society and indeed culture we are forever forging stronger relationships with technology. Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), GPS, iPhones and the Internet are all examples of the daily influences of digital media. This interaction has and is continuing to shape the way we live, how we perceive our environment, the way we communicate with each other, and importantly how we view our relationship with art. Passing Through explores the movement of the spectator turned interactor on a personal journey, engaging in direct conversation with the artworks in order to realise and complete the work that would not exist without his/her actions.

AboutThe Tin Shed was a multi-faceted platform of exhibition, experimentation and discussion dedicated to the promotion of work bringing together art and technology in engaging, provocative and unexpected ways. &#38;nbsp;The Tin Shed Gallery was the focal point of our programme; housed in the foyer of Goldsmiths College’s Ben Pimlott Building it was a versatile exhibition and meeting space for new and established, local and international artists.

We organised a vibrant exhibition program of work by visiting artists which formed the foundation for an on-going series of seminar events bringing together international artists and academics in discussion on the key issues raised by each exhibit. &#38;nbsp;We believed it was to the benefit of both arts practitioners and academics to engage in these debates not only to further their own research but to challenge their own preconceived notions and those of their audience.

The Tin Shed, through its close partnership with Goldsmiths College in South East London, was uniquely placed to facilitate these connections between artists and the academic community. &#38;nbsp;We where are to able to offer artists short term residences within the Goldsmiths Digital Studios, working alongside postgraduate students, PhD candidates and established specialists engaged in cutting-edge research intersecting art, science and society.

When the gallery was not occupied by one of our visiting artists’ exhibitions it was open to Goldsmiths students to experiment with and promote their work in a public setting. &#38;nbsp;Selected from an open call for proposals, these projects gave students invaluable experience of the exhibition process and an opportunity to test their work in a public setting. &#38;nbsp;The wider New Cross area of London is already home to a vast array of community and student-led projects; in this spirit we actively encouraged both students and visiting artists to extend their work beyond the institution and to seek new audiences in the wider community.
